The 13th annual Vancouver Estival Trivia Open (VETO) was held on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at the University of British Columbia.

This was a guerrilla-style tournament, meaning that all questions were written by members of the participating teams, and there was no central editing. Question packets were shared with a mirror tournament (VETO's Eastern Trivia Open) being held the same day at the University of Toronto.

All staff were drawn from the participating teams during their bye rounds. Thanks to Mike for getting us space at UBC.

General observations and lessons learned

• We were lucky that our predetermined schedule allowed us to start the tournament before two teams had arrived completely, by shifting one round. We hadn't considered that possibility when making the schedule, and when I say "lucky", it's because if both of the missing teams did not happen to have a bye at the same time in one round, we would have had to redesign the schedule by making a team substitution, which would have been more confusing when we already had schedules printed.
• Every team contributed a packet!
• A couple of teams printed out their packets on paper, but most of them brought them on laptops and flash drives (and one team with printed packets also had an audio bonus on a flash drive). Most of the electronic packets were not transmitted to the laptops until the beginning of the round when they were played. If we had made everybody load their packets to the laptops all at once, at the beginning, it would have saved some time.
• There was a smaller turnout this year at the mirror in Ontario, but we still got four packets from them.
• The I.K. Barber Centre at UBC worked out well, for the second time (first time was in 2008).
• There were some players on the UBC team who were new to quiz bowl, but none of them are students anymore. None of the SFU players are students anymore, either, so we'll still need to find new people to play in future possible tournaments in the Vancouver area. But the Washington team had some players who were new to quiz bowl, and they were willing to make the trip here for VETO!
