Fifth Annual
Vancouver Estival Trivia Open
July 19, 2003

The fifth annual Vancouver Estival Trivia Open (VETO) was held on Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the Harbour Centre Campus of Simon Fraser University in downtown Vancouver, B.C.

This was a guerrilla-style tournament, meaning that all questions were written by members of the participating teams, and there was no central editing. Question packets were shared with a mirror tournament (VETO Escapes to Toronto Ontario) being held the same day in Toronto. All staff were drawn from the participating teams during their bye rounds.

Questions are available for free download! (saved on the Stanford Packet Archive)

We had eight teams, with a total of 30 players. In reports of VETO from its first four years, we used to note the observation that that year's VETO either matched or broke the records for both number of teams and number of players at a quiz bowl tournament in Western Canada. This year, we cannot make the same claim, because we had fewer teams and fewer players than last year. We did not have any visitors from farther away than Maple Ridge or Tsawwassen this year, except "Rusty", a recent graduate of the SFU quiz bowl team.

However, if you consider VETO and its mirror, if any, in Ontario (Waterloo in 2000, London in 2001, Toronto in 2003) to be one tournament — a reasonable idea, because both "brackets" played on the same packets, and the top teams from the two brackets even played each other — every VETO + mirror has either matched or exceeded its predecessor in both number of games and number of teams. Most importantly, the 15 teams and 59 players made this year's installment, by both measures, the largest quiz bowl tournament ever held in Canada.

Round-Robin Results

First we played a single round-robin. Rounds were untimed, with 20 tossups in each. Power tossups were not used. Each team supplied one packet, except for B2B, which generously supplied two, both written by Brock! The Junta team also moderated on a packet written by the Holy PHUT team in Toronto.

We used the following schedule for teams to be labelled A through H:

      game rooms
    2235 2250 2520 : packet, other byes
 1. BH CG DF : E A
 2. EF DG CH : A B
 3. FG EH AC : B D
 4. AG BF CE : D H
 5. CD BE AF : H G
 6. BC AD FH : G E
==================================  40-minute lunch break
 7. GH AE BD : C F
 8. AB DH EG : F C
 9. DE CF : other ABGH
10. BG AH : other CDEF
The actual matching of letters to teams was not made until VETO morning, because this being a guerrilla tournament, circumstances would likely arise that would require us to shift things around. The assignments were made pseudo-randomly based on the following constraints: Despite the 8 a.m. start, everyone arrived more or less on time. So we didn't have to shift the schedule around to fit in late-coming teams. We also didn't need to modify the schedule because of problems of availability of equipment. The only special equipment required was a tape player for one round, and Meeting and Event Services had supplied one for every room.

Here are the scores for the games in the round-robin.

Team statistics

Here are the team stats for the round-robin. Teams are ranked primarily by win-loss record, secondarily by average normalized points per game. The normalized score in a particular game is the game score divided by the average score of all teams that played on the same packet. A team's average normalized points per game is the average of the normalized score over all games played by a team. We chose to break ties by average normalized points per game in an attempt to reduce the skew arising from the variation in difficulty levels of packets. Guerrilla tournaments, more than any other kind, can be expected to have packets that vary widely in difficulty, and that was also the case here as shown in the Packet Statistics section.

W: Wins
L: Losses
ANPPG: Average Normalized Points Per Game
PPG: average Points Per Game
+10: number of tossups answered correctly
-5: number of incorrect interrupts
BAvg: average points per bonus
PA: average Points Against

Finals

The top two teams from the round-robin, B2B and FARSIDE, faced off in a best-of-three series, in which the round-robin game counted retroactively as the first game in the series. Since B2B had won that first game, FARSIDE would have to win two more games, but B2B would have to win only one. Results:

The last four columns indicate in which of the four previous VETOs the person played (Y if yes, or M if in the mirror in Waterloo in '00 or in London in '01).

Packet statistics

For every packet, this table shows the number of games played and the minimum, median, and maximum of the total score, number of tossups answered, number of incorrect interrupts, and average bonus points (over all bonuses answered by either team) for all games played on the packet.

We show two lines of stats for each packet: The first line gives results in Vancouver, and the second line gives results on the same packet in Toronto. For completeness, the end of the table shows stats for two additional packets that were used in Toronto but not in Vancouver. As you might guess from glancing at the table, the packets were played in a completely different order in Toronto.
