The 2002 Great Lakes TRASH Regional was held at the University of Western Ontar io on November 9, 2002. At first there were 7 teams, then 6, then 5, and finally 6 again, as McMaster d ropped out, then one Rochester team, and a second UWO team was created in the morning. The final 6 teams were: Tradition of Heritage (UWO) - Cameron Chapman, Bridget Ker, Anthony Pham, Mike Plyley, Adam Toews, and Matt Trudgen Team Danny Devito (UWO) - Jonathan Altman, Mike Plyley (for awhile), Vincent Sh iao, and Matt Trudgen (for awhile) Victoria's Secret (Toronto) - Adam Hincks, Faraz Siddiqui, Michael Simmonds, an d Zhan Huan Zhou Toronto B (Toronto)*** - Tom Beaman, David Germain, Bobby Hsu, and Ricardo Lask aris Men From Nantucket (Rochester) - Michael Adelman, Gordon Arsenoff, Dan Blake, G eorge Flevares, and Brian Furniss Ed Martin's Quiz Bowl Scholarship Fund - Matt Lafer (Windham Earl), Tyler Liebe rman (Plaxico), Steve Traicoff, Leo Wolpert (Milkman Dan), and Geoff Zmyslowski ***Toronto B's actual name was something spelled phonetically in a language wit h both clicks and tones. I don't even think I could write it with the standard ASCII representations of IPA symbols. Each team played each other team twice in a 10-round round robin. Teams were t hen ranked 1-6, based on win/loss record, head-to-head, or total points as necessary (total points was necessary to break a tie between Tradition of Heritage and Toronto B). First and second, third and fourth, and fifth and sixth were then paired up, and played a best-two-out-of-three round of playoffs to determine final standings: Team Win Loss Tie Points PPG TH 1 0 -5 TPts BPts Conv PPT ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Ed Martin's Quiz Bowl Scholarship Fund 12 0 0 3890 324.2 220 13 3 19 1235 2655 19.96 17.68 Men From Nantucket 8 4 0 2750 229.2 220 10 1 21 905 1845 18.27 12.50 Tradition of Heritage 7 5 0 2480 206.7 220 9 5 19 855 1625 17.11 11.27 Toronto B 5 7 0 1770 147.5 220 8 1 34 640 1130 13.95 8.05 Team Danny Devito 3 8 1 1120 93.3 220 5 7 9 525 595 10.44 5.09 Victoria's Secret 0 11 1 490 40.8 220 3 4 14 270 220 6.47 2.23 This ended up being exactly the same standings before the best-two-out-of-three . Ed Martin's Quiz Bowl Scholarship Fund defeated Men From Nantucket twice, as did Tradition of Heritage over Toron to B; Team Danny Devito beat Victoria's Secret in Game 1. Ed Martin's Quiz Bowl Scholarship Fund went undefeated to win the Regional. Name ly: a globe pencil sharpener (made in China, and featuring such labels as Palestine for Israel, Falkland Islands in brackets under Islas Malvinas, and no label at all for Taiwan); two boxes of Smart Choice Macaroni and Cheese (not stale this year ); earmuffs; a Psycho Chihuahua Magnet; a San Jose Sharks puck; a fish bowl; a trivia game called NHL Hockey Challenge; B ingo blotters; Magnetic football/chess/Sorry games; a Beethoven pen; a "4 in a Row" game (not Connect Four); a "Congrats" ba lloon; a Lucky Penny keychain; a CD of Canadian pop/folk music called Above The 49th; a Choose Your Own Adventure Book called "Longhorn Territory"; a book, bought from a book sale at UWO's D.B. Weldon Library, about Henry Larsen; an ant farm; a cassette holder; a manicure set; an alarm clock; a portable CD box; CD cases; and a Santa Claus clock. Not all of these prizes were taken, but essentially anyone who wanted one could take one (i.e. we did not give out certain prizes for certain things). All I can remember is that Bridget Ker took the "C ongrats" balloon, and someone from Rochester took the Choose Your Own Adventure book. Thanks to everyone who played; my sister Kristin for keeping score; Rico Catibo g, Mark Hrycyshyn, Steve Nunes, and in the playoff rounds Geoff Zmyslowski and Leo Wolpert for reading; to everyone who br ought prizes; and to everyone for putting up with the uncertainty about the number of teams, as well as the uncertainty of h ow to run playoff rounds with six teams rather than five (that is, thanks for putting up with me being a bumbling tourn ament director!).
